Nursing at B.P. Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital (BPKMCH)

Nursing service at BPKMCH is full of challenges and opportunities.  We believe that “caring” is the foundation and the utmost important component of nursing practice. Caring is accomplished with wisdom, knowledge, compassion and competency. We recognize the complex needs of every individual affected by cancer.

The nursing department is responsible in providing comprehensive and quality nursing care to the cancer patients. Nurses at BPKMCH aim to lead the best practice in cancer and palliative care. There is a good spirit of work within the nursing team, and collaborative relationship with other health professionals.

Our service includes inpatient care through Surgical Oncology Wards, Radiation Oncology Ward, Medical Oncology Wards and Post-operative ward; functioning of operation theaters (major and minor); support in diagnostic studies and outpatient block; and palliative nursing through hospice. We also provide Casualty and Day Care Services for cancer patients. In addition to the above mentioned care, our team is actively involved in cancer education, counseling and screening healthy women for cancer.

Nurses working in BPKMCH are moving towards specialty and have introduced various nurse lead clinics: stoma care, breast care, palliative care, counseling and screening clinics. These new roles aim to improve the quality of care to the patients and their families.

Screening Program:

Nurses are engaged in healthy women’s clinic in the hospital and community where women are screened for and taught about cancer of cervix and breast. Pap test, clinical breast examination, cancer awareness program emphasizing on cancer prevention, early detection and various treatment modalities are also being run by the nurses.

Orientation Program

Orientation program for the newly appointed nurses is designed to provide basic foundation in cancer and palliative care. The program incorporates all the essential information required to work in the different wards and units the hospital. It also intends to give an overview of the hospital policies.

In-service Nursing Education

In-service Nursing Education unit is committed to improving the quality of care for the cancer patients. Various continued Nursing Education (CNE) programs are organized regularly.

Academic Activities

The department of nursing is actively involved in training and clinical placement of nursing students from various nursing institutes. This includes certificate level to the master level of the nursing students.
